Powercut bliss

and then the power gone...
there used to be days when there was no electricity and people were happy since they had no idea as to what it was. the darkness and sultry summers were easily and effectively dealt with hurrican lights, sitting under the neem tree and hand fans. most of the household works ended before dark nights fell . and the rest of the time spent gossiping , catching up with the news or listening to stories from puranas.
then came some flickring low voltaged supply of electricity and hailed as a great comfort and eyeopener to the otherwise 'backward' villages.
and then technology became high and people knew how to use or misuse power. the house with out power connection was considered as low class. fans and lights along with radio and television(remember by this time electronics has shown it's power too) were part of ones life. and what a life!!
but one day the inevitable happened and there was shortage of power supply and some sect of cities and villages started experiencing 'powercuts'. but now why do they huff and puff about sultry summer and silent dark nights which were a common thing in the past?
the reason is as long as we donot know about a comfort we dont care. but once experienced it we cannot be with out it and the discomfort is double fold.
but in reality a powercut is a blessing in disguise.
while most of our time is spent in front of the TV we forget the value of a family as buffer for our stress. under the candle light the magic of togetherness happens. kids learn to make shadow figures and discover that there are more plays than videogames, elders go to the porch to get that precious natural breeze.. and in that process get to know their neighbors while young couple recapture their lost and forgotten love plays. invariably some remincing would happen refreshing our mind.
many kids also get a chance to see the moon and stars only on this occasion! so far they may not even have known they existed. i personally like going to the nearby temple to view the natural lit garbhagraha and get the feeling" this is how He should be glowing up there!! "
and now this simple happiness is also slowly lost with the arrival of generators and inverters.
that too with the later we dont even realise the powercut.and so life goes on as usual with blarring tv sets bright lights hiding the soothing moon light and twinkling stars .
natural breeze give way to the madly rotating fans....and may be some day i mean some night we might get a chance to see the stars and moon because they always await us.and never get tired of being unnoticed.
looking forward to happy powercuts!!

I totally agree with you. When we had powercut for more than a week last year (thanks to the Chennai floods), I was very happy in a way because the neighbourhood was free of the annoying TV sounds. We had enough time to read books and creative work. It reminded me of my childhood days when we look forward to powercuts so that we dont have to read and we can play for hours together. With the modern technologies, our children are actually missing those simple fun in life.
